Hi Gordon
The fitting of the first carried out flak bridge conversion (Turm 2) started in December 1942 but was slowed by some minor bugs which delayed it until
mid January 1943. By this time in North Atlantic the Allied airpower made any
surface attack too dangerous and the use of the deck gun as an offensive weapon effectively ceased.The last recorded gun attack took place in the spring of 1942.
On November 14th, 1942 BdU ordered the removal of deck guns from type VII U-Boats to compensate the weight of the increased Flak armament.
Therefore and generally speaking, the conning tower strengthened flak modification implied the removal of the deck gun.
However some type VII (mainly in the Arctic) and long range type IX U-Boats, kept their deck guns even before their conning towers were modified to get a improved
anti-aircraft capability by adding a second flak platform with Turm conversions.
I can only remember some evidences of the combination you suggest:
