Sorry Jeffrey, but I Stapley is right.
The early boats had an iron deck. If needed, I have some pictures on the wep-site of U 552, that shows this case:

Click on \"Galerie U 552 - Bilder des Bootes\" (Sorry, but the international version of this wep-site is still in work.
Later in the war, due to the lack of materials, they used wodden planks on the deck.
