Hi All,
the primary reason for earlier models\' different deck planking patterns evolved from changed requirement of ready access to storage below. The lack of the 8.8 in later models negated the need for foundation and ready ammo storage, dropping requirements to carry a solid dinghy etc contributed to redesigned planking patterns, less number of access hatches.
It is not a question of less sophisticated, but rather an evolutionary design of the pattern. Individual building yards had a certain amount of freedom to deviate for the lead-yard\'s guide lines in this respect.
Fore- and Aft ship sections were always covered by steel sheeting for about 20-25 feet. Markus\' statement is erroneous and already corrected by Jeff.
