U99 displayed two genuine horseshoes, dredged up on its anchor chain (if the Revell instruction sheet is to be believed). These were gilded and fixed on either side of the conning tower, roughly above the navigation lights. The crew fixed them point downwards, which as any fule kno, allows the luck to run out. (See also "U Boat Killer) by Donald Macintyre and his exchange w / Kretschmer after U99 was sunk by HMS Walker).
