U-Boat help!

I'm writing up a webzine article on my 1/125th Revell U-Boat, and, basically being an aircraft and car modeling person, I have a dumb question: can anybody tell me what those large "bulbs" are that are often seen attached to the rigging of German WWII Uboats (they look like floats on a fishing net to me)? Seems like I knew at one time, but can't seem to remember what they were.

Are the wires that run to and from the conning tower radio antennas and are these bulbs insulators on those antennas, or are they something else? It's driving me crazy that I can't remember, but surely some of you U-Boat experts can answer this for me.


Desperate for your help, and thanks in advance for any info you can provide!
