Grills Underneath the Ballast Tanks

SALUT!

As many of you know, I am in the midst of building Amati's U Boot kit. It has been a tough kit, but finally I am within a day or so of priming the thing. I was writing to you to inquire as to what you might suggest I do about those grills that sit underneat the ballast tanks. I was considering trying to cut out the frame of the grills, and then place them over mesh screen. However, haivng reduced these grills to scale, it would be most difficult to fabricatre these borders. THe only solution seems to be custom photo-etchign these grills: something I am wholly unprepared to do at this point. Any suggestions?
