Dear Pat,

During her active "life" U-505 had 4 Mailings on her conning tower.
KK Loewe was her first commander. His family crest was the first Mailing on the CT of U-505. It was a jumping white lion holding an axe in his paw. The second Mailing was an axe and was shown under the Command of commander Tschech. Together with the axe the boat had the 5 olympic rings painted on the C/T ,the crewsign of his(Tschech) former officers class of 1936.Tschech killed himself during a DC attack on 25-10-1943.
On Christmas eve 1943 U-505 went on patrol with another new commander, Harald Lange, and on the C/T was a new emblem, the large seashell wich is seen in all of the pictures taken at the time of her capture. (It is roughly the same seashell as seen in the emblem of the oilcompany "SHELL" All the above information comes from the book of Georg Hogel "Embleme, Wappen, Mailings"
deutscher U-Boote 1939-1945.

About he "lightning bolt". Viktor Schutze, commander of U-103 had the first letter of his last name "S" turned into the emblem on his boat. It was the "rune" S wich looks like a lightning bolt(same as in the patches worn by the SS)This emblem was also on a second boat of Schutze namely U-605.

Kind regards
