Hello Webmaster@U-35.com,
Happy New Year.
Yes,you are right, no VII-A. This is rather unfortunate
because there was a significant difference in the hull of
this boat and conning tower. And afterall,it was from the
success in this design that they went on to produce all
variants of the Type VII and the different upgrades.
Now on the positive note, as modeller with my primary
interest in German U-boats, I have looked at the Revell
1:125 scale u-boat which have been around for years.
Although the mold is of yesteryear technology, they are
a good basis for conversions.
When I carefully look at the Revell U-47 a Type VII-B,
I concluded that it can be modified to represent the
Type VII-A quite easily.
The major difference being that the Type VII-A had an
external stern torpedo tube and slightly different
hull flooding slot configuration. With some patience,
the modeller can do the necessary backdating.
As far as the tower is concerned, adding the air
and vent intakes on the vertical surfaces by drilling
and the removmal of the mid-tower splash guard will
represent the Type VII-A quite well.
This kit although not perfect, will nicely represent
the Type VII-A after these modifications.
Yes, it seems that there is a large interest in modelling
the u-boat. Revell has brought us the very nice 1:72
Type VII-C and soon the VII-C Turm IV.
The annoucement of a VII-D in 1:144 is great, especially
new tooling. What I would like to see them offer in this
smaller scale, is all the variants of the Type VII.
The larger boats are great but the smaller take up a lot
less shelf space.
PS Great site you have there!
Regards,
Joe
