engine and electric room

I'm writing a book that takes place inside of a IX. I was looking at the 360 views of the U505 (http://www.msichicago.org/exhibit/U505/virtualtour/vr_tour/index.html) and it looks like the engine and electric room are lower then the control room and aft quarters. Is this it was, or have they removed the flooring for viewing. If the floor is lower in that section how did they get in and out of the hatches? It looks like a far drop to take after jumping through a hatch.
