Historically, the boat you are refering to is U-234, a Type XB.
I will not go into the details to keep this short but if you
do a web search for U-234, you will come up with much information about this u-boat.

There is a movie that was released in 1990 called
"Letzte U-Boot, Das" directed by Frank Beyer. It was a
German/American/Japanese/Austrian co-production. It is the story of this particular u-boat. I don't remember exactly
what they used to represent the XB. Try to look up the film,
it is well worth watching.

The film was released in English under the title:
The Last U-Boat
