Another good source is Small Parts, available on line at:
www.smallparts.com
HO scale is 1/87, a little smaller than the 1/72 for the submarine model. The Walthers catalog showed a 1.0mm bolt size as being the smallest, still ~2-3x the 0.35mm of my example. So we can scale down to a bolt 2-3in across the flats, but not anything smaller.
I (try to) restore pocketwatches, and we are at a scale that even the smallest pocket watch screws in my parts box do not reach.
