I didn't open the flood holes on my first 1/72 Revell VIIC... maybe on the next. Anyway, what I did was to spray paint the flood holes black. The light grey colour of the upper hull and the darker grey for the lower hull were then applied in very sharp angles so as to avoid that these colours enter the flood holes. Take for instance the upper hull, here I sprayed the light gray colour from an angle that was about 160 degrees from above (or 20 degrees from straight down, if you like). From where I sit now while writing this message (about 1 1/2 metre from the sub) it looks realistic and you have to move very close to see that these flood holes aren't actually opened.
