Internal supports/bracing

The David Westwood Anatomy book shows a vertical internal support in the bottom of the bow (blow the pressure hull, fore/aft). No worries. The dwg indicates perpendicular braces, but the cross sections don't really show them.

Question: were there perpendicular braces on this support? What did they look like?

To make thismore clear I've posted a picture here showing what I mean:

Any help is greatly apprciated!
