U-217 and U-218 both Type VIID U-boats were painted in a stripe pattern on the upper hull. The base color more inlikely heilgrau 51, and the stripes dunkelgrau 51. The Conning towers were blaugrau 58.1 These paint schemes were late war 1942-1945. U-218 was the only Type VIID to survive the war. Because of the very nature of a U-Boat they were never left bare metal and certainly never silver!!
I am currently working on a 1/72 conversion of U-218 later in the war with the extended wintergarden and the stripe paint scheme.
Regards,
Dan
