U-995 variations

Hi everyone,

I've searched the internet as well as this forum and can't see to find an answer to a simple question: what are the differences between the two U-995 boats in the Revell 1/72 Atlantic kit?

I just bought the kit (my first in, um, 30 years) and decided to build the U-995 but then noticed there are two paint schemes in the instructions without any explanation for what their significance is. The first plan calls for an almost white upper hull while the second says to paint it light grey.

I'm at the point where I'm banging my head on the desk trying to figure this out. I'd really appreciate any information someone might have.
