Hello SnakeDoc,
The U-boat manual:
M.Dv 381 U-Bootskunde f.U-Boot Bauart VIIC-1940 Geheim
Naval Service Manual 381 U-Boat training for submarine type VII C edition - 1940 Secret
My poor attempt at a translation....
Page 38:
Wasserdichtes Heck und Back.
Water-tight Stern and Bow.
The foremost and rear part of the external ship is for the absorption of the pitching of the boat as waterproof bow and/or stern prepared. Both have Flooding slots and the air is exhausted by an air vent valve.
Low pressure plate 12 has an air line to eack tank (stern and Bow).

It looks like the tanks are flooded in rough seas for horizontal stability...
Page 39:
Trimzellen.
Trim tanks.
One in the bow and stern trim area the cells are 41.6 m distance from each other, are linked by a trim pipe with a water trim valve and a trim pitch switch. The trimming is done with air or with the Auxiliary bilge and trim pump.
It looks like water is moved between the two trim tanks (internal) to longitudinally balance the U-boat.

You were correct about water not being moved between the Stern and Bow Bouyancy tanks. Water is moved between the internal trim tanks to balance the U-boat.
Comments???
Kind regards,
Don_
