There's been discussion about that box cover in many threads in several forums with a concensus that it was fiction. However, a week ago I stubled on this thread.....

If you scroll down to the picture of U-997, save and enlarge it (I made it my desktop background:) it sure looks like there are indeed the squiggles on the light areas. Pay particular attention to the area above the flood holes and aft of the dark band on the CT. I'm hoping to find another picture (the only other I know of is in the kit instructions).

For certain, that's one cool scheme! If only the pic were better quality and in color!
