Question on "dimpled hulls" on type VII U-Boat

I have, on occasion, seen some hulls that looked dimpled below the saddle tanks and just fore and aft of the tanks. I am building a 1:48 type VII and have done some of that "dimple' effect. I'm trying to get information as to why this was. Anyone know?
