U-boat diesel reliability

I recently read about US Fleet Submarine main diesel problems in Warship International. The HOR engines were poor and even the GM ones were criticised for heavy smoke. How were German GW and MAN diesels rated by crews? Were they any post-war comparisons of main diesel reliability of RN, US and German main diesels? From the limited info I have, I don´t think the US two-strokes were a particularly excellent choice.
