As far as my reading as gone there were three types of diesel engines on US submarines in WWII. The H.O.R. engines were the worst and all of those subs had their engines changed to one of the other types during the war (a major overhaul change - not done lightly). The Winton diesels from General Motors had problems that required in-patrol servicing regarding the valves for the pistons. The Fairbanks-Morse engines were very reliable - Dick O'Kane refered to them as 'rock-crushers' in his history of USS Tang.
