The propellor sealing gland had a bearing on each end such as an oillite bearing and in between these was the packing material, I have read it could have been oil soaked leather or a material called 'OAKUM which is a rope like packing material and is also soaked in oil. A tube filled with grease called a stuffing box would not work as the pressure would only force the grease out into the boat.
