There were several types of midget submarines. Some, built by Japan, had a warhead in the nose and were essnetially manned torpedoes. Some, like those used in the Pearl Harbor attack, carried two external torpedoes. Some, like the British X-craft that crippled Tirpitz, carried large explosive charges detonated with timers that allowed the midget to escape.
