To follow a bit further: the story of Allied aircraft being able to home in on emissions from the Metox seems to have either been an accident or a terrific bit of disinformation. I've never found the exact account, but it appears that a captured airman let this slip during interrogation, whereupon uboat crews were instructed to discontinue use of the device. The truth was, the Allies had perfected the 10cm radar which could not be detected by Metox, which explained the number of aircraft attacks without warning.

Having read of some of their escapades, I wouldn't put it past the British Secret Service to have deliberately planted that bit of disinformation...
