Bells

I would appreciate any information on the use of bells on U-boats, especially answers to the following questions.
What were the bells used for? (ie: alarm, fog, keeping time, ceremonial, etc.)
Who was responsible for the upkeep of the bell?
Did all U-boats have bells?
When in port, where the bells always placed on the railing of the Wintergarten?
When on patrol, where was the bell stored?
What was their size?
Did they have any special markings? (ie: boat number, commission date, etc.)
Does anyone have a good photo of an U-boat bell that I can use in a book?
