Hi GW,
Just came across a website depicting German CA Prinz Eugen.
Under US flag on the way to Bikini Atoll her sonar system was tested by USNavy after transiting Panama Canal.
Quote:
The underwater accoustic detection system of the PE had already aroused particularly great interest on the part of specialists of the USNavy in earlier inspections. Here in the Pacific, not far from the Balboa naval base, this system was thoroughly tested. In spectacular \"attacks\", four US submarines launched a total of 34 exercise torpedoes. Every one of them was detected by the sonar operators in my division and - much to the astonishment of the experts - the trajectory was reported to the bridge soon enough to enable the commanding officer to dodge the torpedoes in all cases. All attacks were recorded by means of recorders and grammophone records - for noise analysis later on. The grand spectacle of the Prinz sailing at top speed (32.5kn) corresponded exactly to the tastes of a Hollywood film crew (aboard).....

This passage was written by a German LtCdr. aboard as part of the transfer crew from Bremerhaven via US East Coast to San Diego.
