The standard RN asdic type 144 had an transmission interval equal to the time for the \"ping\" to travel out and back from the target. In search mode this would be about 5000 yds ie 2500 yards each way. When in contact and with a decreasing range the interval between transmissions would be decreased to obtain accuracy in the final moments before firing at \"instant echoes\"
