Phil -
Information on individual patrols is available from various sources, including the appendices of Clay Blair\'s book: \"Hitler\'s U-Boat War\". For a mathematical mean, you might want to use a database, but the time varied widely for a number of reasons.

The type IX boats had longer range and more room for provisions than the smaller type II boats. The shortest patrols were those aborted -- usually as a result of damage or machinery breakdown. Patrols involving combat were generally shorter than unproductive patrols because the risk of damage was higher, and the boat might expend all its torpedoes. The longest patrols involved type IX boats assigned to distant areas which proved unproductive.

A typical North Atlantic patrol by a type VII boat in 1942 lasted 6 to 8 weeks. A typical distant patrol by a type IX boat lasted upwards of 3 months. =AL=
