Hello,
It is my understanding that on Type VII and IX boats that the deisel, electromotor and propeller shaft shared the same axis and were engaged as necessary with clutches. My question about these are as follows:
Could a deisel run the electromotor exclusively (with the clutch for the prop disengaged, assuming that there two clutches per shaft) in the situation where a u-boat needed to provide as much power as possible to charging the batteries?
How did battery charging needs affect shaft horsepower at the propellor? Was the generator load adjustable in the event that full horsepower was needed at the props?
I remember a post stating that electric and deisel could be brought online simultaneously for a slight performance increase. I assume that is true?
Finally, were the electromotors striclty DC in all modes of operation?
Thanks,
Tom
