Watch rotation on U-boats

Hi folks,
Reading quite a few U-boats related books those times, I\'m confronted with a problem concerning the different watches in charge through a 24 hours time period:
In German they are mentionned as three different teams called respectively:
Seemännische Nr.1
Seemännische Nr.2
Seemännische Nr.3
The watch periods in the conning tower never exceeded 4 hours and, given the sea and weather conditions, were cut down to 2 hours. How did the whole system function and adapt itself to the climatical extremes encountered by the boats ?
Thanks
Marc
