How does a U-boat acheive neutral boyancy?
I know that there are saddle tanks on each side of the U-Boat. When the Captain orders the dive, the top of the tanks are opened. This lets sea water in and the U-boat gets heavier.
But what is really happening?
Does the U-boat sink because it takes on more water and is heavier.
Or does the U-boat sink because it loses the buoyant properties of the air held in the saddle tanks.
