Contact pistol failures

A most interesting exhibit. It appears that one reason for the failure of German contact pistols early in the war was the design of the \"antenna\", they were too short. If the torpedo hit its target at an oblique angle, the \"antenna\" would not make contact with the hull, but instead the hull would be hit by the side of the torpedo nose causing the torpedo to bounce off unexploded. Can anyone confirm this hypothesis?
