HUff-Duff (High Frequency Direction Finding) relies on detecting the direction of a signal, and does not need any knowledge of the content.

Fast as Bletchley could be, HUFF-DUFF was bascially tactical and instant. An operator on a ASW vessel picked up a radoi signal, and within seconds determined its bearing and posible distance (based on strength of signal). HUFF DUFF often brought a DE charging out of the mist on a surprised U-boat within minutes of broadcast.
