The coating Tarnmatte, used to cover these boats, is pictured on a schnorchel head in David Miller's book, U-boats, the illustrated history of the raiders of the deep. In this same englisch language volume on page 111, a close-up of this material is offered - code name of Tarnmatte was Alberich.
