Depth Charges

Hello Everyone: A thing about depth charges I've always wondered about. I recall reading books stating depth charges could wreck a submarine with a hit within 50 meters. Then we see movies showing submarines receiving hits with the charge practically resting on the deck! Anyone who might be able to shed some light on this-I would appreciate your comments.
