While for the most part they were terribly misused, the Japanese produced some excellent submarines, including some with a tremendous operating range and very high underwater speeds. They also had torpedoes that worked. Negatives included flawed doctrine that emphasized anti-warship use rather than commerce raiding, less reliable TDCs, and being too big to dive quickly.
