Walter,

While U-boats did use standardized subcomponents the 3 main U-Boat types you mention were not interchangeable versions of each other. They had different pressure hull thicknesses,different pressure hull diameters and in the case of the type IX were framed externally (the other 2 were framed internally). Now as series production of the 2 'main' types increased (type VII and IX) modular construction was introduced to a certain extent. In the case of the type VII pressure hull sections were made up and welded together on the slips rather than being built in situ as before. It was only with the type XXI and XXIII that true modular construction was introduced by the germans.That said components like compressers/pumps etc were standard across all U-Boat types.
