The same applies to recovering AFVs, the Germans recycled a large proportion of their "destroyed" AFVs during the early salad years. There are quite a few advantages to controlling the battlefield after the battle.
Recovering empty ammunition cases was indeed an important source of recycled raw materials, especially the brass.
