At least on the Typ IIA Finnish prototype Vesikko, which has a periscope made by Carl Zeiss there is a range finding feature. I don't know how it works (as the scope isn't functional) but given the physical construction I'd guess it's a split image device.

It's a separate ocular under the regular one, with dials for both range and target lenght surrounding the ocular.
