Grenerally, U-boat diesels are "air-started".......It would take a large electric starter
motor with suitable reduction gear to roll over the diesels for starting them.
The DC electric propulsion motors can be ordered to reverse at the same rpms as in the forward mode, but the submerged u-boat is not able to keep this rearward motion for long, as its hull and control planes were designed to go forward.
