RDF Loop

Was the RDF loop on a WWII German submarine used for navigation on a radio beacon ONLY or was it also used for intercepting convoy or enemy transmissions for homing in on a target ship (assuming there were transmissions from the enemy to intercept)?

Basically when and under waht circumstance was the RDF looped used while at sea?
