Hi Kurt, Directional antennas on hf (4mhz -24mhz) are cumbersom even nowadays and in any case they produce a broad beam and cannot be compared to the microwave sharp beam in Radar. An hf directional antenna still produces significant radiation off the sides of it path which can be received in most cases. In any case a uboat transmitting to it's base in France would still put a good signal into a D/F receiver in England and Gibraltar where a couple of the receivers were. Best wishes, Roy
