Battery operations

Can anyone tell me how long a U-boat could stay submerged running on batteries before depletion forced them to surface ?

If depleted then how long would they have to spend on the surface to recharge the same ?

Taking into account that no U-Boat commander would run his batteries flat without good reason, what would be a standard running pattern for a sub, submerged and on the surface ?
