On a sub I saw the "Drum Controllers" which I assume were large rheostats that controlled the field current of the motors for speed control.
What was used to control the current/voltage of the armature?
The slower the motor rpm the higher the armature current draw. i.e.
The back emf generated by the motor reduces the current through the armature as the rpms increase thus reducing the armature current draw.
It would seem that both the field and armature currents would have to be controlled to conserve the batteries and keep the armature from excessive heating.
