Both G7a (air) and G7e (electric) torpedoes had big-time problems with their warheads early in the war. And also depth-keeping.

I am not aware of any problems specific to the electric torpedoes, but I'm sure someone more knowledgable could correct me :)

Clay Blair's "Hitler's Uboat War" discusses it some, the problem particularly came to a head during the Norwegian campaign.

G7e's didn't get a reliable magnetic pistol until the Pi-2, which was introduced in 1943. The Pi-3 followed later for air torpedoes.

Unforutnatley, I don't know of any sites that discuss the operation of the pistol in detail.
