errors due to metric-inch conversion?

For german boats the original measurements have to be metric. So if any author states numbers in inches - then these numbers had been calculated metric ones. Such conversion inevitably are troubled by rounding errors - and so are hard to compare. If you repeat that calculation the error might grow (and a metric number computed from inches might become different from the original metric one ...).
My advice would be: forget any numbers quotet in inches (that can't be exact!) and stick to numbers from primary sources.
