S-gerat

Can anybody tell me what an ‘S-gerat’ was?

In context: Five German ships are travelling together so the one equipped with S-gerat was placed closest to the shore.

It would be easy to assume from this that it was a depth-finding sonar device, but hopefully someone will know for sure.
