Rig for Silent was a procedure, rather than a feature. You would shut down ventilator fans, pumps, and all non-essential systems. The crew would avoid moving around. In short, you did everything possible to avoid making a noise that could be transmitted through the hull into the water. Except in the last U-boat designs the normal electric motors were used. Boats such as the Typ XXI had separate "creeping" motors which were connected to the shafts by drive belts for additional sound isolation.
