as far as i can gather the bells were positioned in every compartment of the boat to alert every member of the crew, and to alert the commander, chief, engine room and crew.
they would have been located in the deckhead, with the emergency lighting.
i think in the later boats when the alarm dive order was rang down a light also flashed in the engine room spaces, because of the noise from the diesels etc
