Submarine defensive measures

A naive question. When a submarine is being depth charged why is it not possible for a mine type device to be released from the submerged sub and float to the service and be magnetically drawn to a surface ship? Other then torpedos fired horizontally, why couldn't a weapon be developed to fire vertically?
