Fuel installation - question...

Hello everybody.

During studing ONI U-570 report, I've got stuck in fuel installation diagrams. I cannot figure out, what was these ([www.uboatarchive.net], [www.uboatarchive.net]) pipes for. I'd be gratefull if you could explain function of these installations.
